August 31st: 651, Death of Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne. He was an Irish bishop and missionary.
 
September 1st: 1914, Russia changes name of St Petersburg to Petrograd.
 
September 2nd: 1944, Holocaust diarist Anne Frank was sent to Auschwitz.
September 3rd: 1658, Death of Oliver Cromwell. He was an English general from 1653-58 & Lord Protector, he died at 59.
September 4th: 1682, English astronomer Edmund Halley observed the comet named after him.
September 5th: 1698, Russian Tsar Peter the Great imposed a tax on beards.
September 6th: 1941, All Jews over age 6 in German territories were ordered to wear a star.

August 24th: 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii & Herculaneum, 15,000 people die.
August 25th: 1530, Birth of Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible, he was the 1st tsar of Russia.
August 26th: 1845, Birth of Mary Ann Nichols, she was an English victim of Jack the Ripper. She was born in the city of Westminster. She was Jack the Ripper’s first victim.
August 27th: 1942, Cuba declared war on Germany, Japan & Italy.
August 28th: 1924, British children's writer Enid Blyton aged 27 married editor Major Hugh Alexander Pollock,  who was aged 36.
August 29th: 1898, The Goodyear tire company was founded.
August 30th: 1932, Hermann Goering was elected Chairman of the Reichstag.

This Week in History: Week 34

August 17th: 1946, George Orwell has "Animal Farm" published in the United Kingdom.
August 18th: 1782, Romantic Age poet and artist William Blake aged 24 married Catherine Boucher, who was 5 years his junior, in St. Mary's Church, Battersea, London.
August 19th: 1561, Mary Queen of Scots arrived in Leith, Scotland to assume throne after spending 13 years in France.
August 20th: 1836, English novelist, best known for Vanity Fair, William Makepeace Thackeray at the age of 25 married Isabella Gethin Shawe aged 20.
August 21st: 1940, Death of Leon Trotsky, a Russian revolutionary who was icepicked by Ramón Mercader at age 62.
August 22nd: 1485, Battle of Bosworth Field, Henry Tudor's forces defeated English King Richard III during the last battle in the Wars of the Roses. King Richard III was killed in Battle.
August 23rd: 1305, William Wallace, Scottish patriot, was executed for high treason by Edward I of England. He was hanged, disembowelled and beheaded at Smithfield in London.

August 10th: 1898, Birth of Jack Haley [born John Joseph], who was an American actor. Best known for his role as the Tin man in The Wizard of Oz. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts.

August 11th: 480 BC, the Death of Leonidas, King of Sparta.
 
August 12th: 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived in the Canary Islands on his first voyage to the New World.
 
August 13th: 1792, In France, Revolutionaries imprisoned French royals including Marie Antoinette.
 
August 14th: 1851, Birth of Doc Holliday. Birth name was John Henry Holliday. Born in Griffin Georgia. He was an American gambler, dentist and gunfighter. He was involved in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, alongside the Earp Brothers.
 
 August 15th: 1040, King Duncan I of Scotland was killed in battle against his first cousin and rival Macbeth, who does succeed him as King.  (Unlike Shakespeare’s play where he is murdered in his sleep!) Also on this day 17 years later in 1057, Macbeth, King of Scots, was slain by son of King Duncan.
 
August 16th: 1977, the death of Elvis Presley. An American musician. He died at Graceland at the age 42. Official cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia.

This Week in History: Week 32


 
August 3rd: 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail on his first voyage with 3 ships called Santa Maria, Pinta and Niña from Palos de la Frontera in Spain for the "Indies".
 
August 4th: 1914, World War One, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener became British Minister of War after Britain declared of war on Germany.
 
August 5th: 1305, William Wallace, who led Scottish resistance to England, was captured by the English near Glasgow and taken to London for trial and execution. John de Menteith, a Scottish knight who was loyal to King Edward I turned Wallace over to English soldiers at Robroyston. Once in London and when he was tried, he was crowned with a garland of oak, suggesting he was the king of outlaws. It is said that his response when being charged with treason was: "I could not be a traitor to Edward, for I was never his subject." And asserted that the absent John Balliol was officially his king.

August 6th: 1809, Birth of Alfred Lord Tennyson. He was born in Somersby, England. He was Poet Laureate of Great Britain. His best known work is The Charge of the Light Brigade.
 
August 7th: 1957, Oliver Hardy, comedian of Laurel & Hardy, died at age 65.  He died in North Hollywood, California from Cerebral Thrombosis.

August 8th: 1918, World War I: The Battle of Amiens began, the Canadian, Australian and British broke through with 600 tanks.
August 9th: 1655, Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell divided England into 11 districts.

July 28th: 1866, Birth of Beatrix Potter, in Kensington England. She was a children's author and illustrator, best known for "The Tale of Peter Rabbit".

July 30th: 1818, Birth of Emily Brontë. Who was an English novelist, she was best known for Wuthering Heights. She was born in Thornton, West Yorkshire.

July 31st: 1917, the 3rd battle of Ypres began in Belgium during the First World War.
 
August 1st: 1834, Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire. The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 came into effect.

July 20th: 1881, the Sioux Indian Chief Sitting Bull, surrendered to US federal troops.

July 21st: 1904, after 13 years, the 4,607-mile Trans-Siberian railway was completed. In the modern day it is the longest railway in the world.
 
July 22nd: 1298, the English, led by King Edward I defeated the Scots, led by William Wallace at Battle of Falkirk, not long after the defeat, Wallace stepped down as the Guardian of Scotland.
 
July 23rd: 1885, Ulysses S. Grant who was the 18th US President from 1869 to 1877 and Union general, died of esophageal cancer in Mount McGregor NY at 63.
 
July 24th: 1567, Mary Queen of Scots was forced to abdicate; her 1-year-old son became King James VI of Scotland.
 
July 25th: 1603, James VI of Scotland was crowned James I of English uniting kingdoms of England and Scotland.
 
July 26th: 1856, Birth of George Bernard Shaw, who was a dramatist (Pygmalion-Nobel 1925). He was born in Dublin, Ireland.

July 13th: 1925, Film producer and co-founder of Walt Disney Productions,  Walt Disney at the age of 23 married Lillian Bounds aged 26 at Lewiston's Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Lewiston, Idaho.
 
July 14th: 1913, Birth of Gerald R Ford, born Leslie King, who was the 41st US Vice President from 1973 to 1974 and the 38th US President from 1974 to 1977. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska.
 
July 15th: 1904, Anton Chekhov, a Russian writer best known for Uncle Vanya, died at age 44 from Tuberculosis.
 
July 16th: 1439, Kissing was banned in England to stop germs from spreading.
 
July 17h: 1917, King George V issued a royal proclamation that changed the name of the British royal house from House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the House of Windsor. He and all his British relatives relinquished their German titles and styles, adopting British-sounding surnames. George then compensated his male relatives by creating them British peers. His cousin, Prince Louis of Battenberg, who earlier in the war had been forced to resign as First Sea Lord through anti-German feeling, became Louis Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven.
 
July 18th: 1925, Adolf Hitler published Mein Kampf. The original title was the catchy "Four and a Half Years (of Struggle) Against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice.”
 
July 19th: 1333, The Battle of Halidon Hill, this was during the second war of Scottish independence. The Scots were defeated by the English, and Berwick –Upon-Tweed was in English hands again.

July 6th: 1893, Prince George, Duke of York (later George V) married Princess Victoria of Teck (Queen Mary) at St James's Palace.
 
July 7th: 1753, British Museum was founded by an Act of Parliament (later opened in 1759)
 
July 8th: 1839, Birth of John D. Rockefeller, in Richford, New York. He was a US capitalist & founder of Standard Oil.
 
July 9th: 1553, Lady Jane Grey, was proclaimed queen of England in succession to Edward VI, following his death, three days earlier he proclaimed both his half-sisters illegitimate. She reigned for nine days before being deposed by Mary Tudor, who had Jane executed the following February.
 
July 10th: 138, Hadrian, Roman emperor ruling from 117 to138 died at 62.
 
July 11th: 1899, Birth of E. B. White, a writer best known for Charlotte's Web.
 
July 12th: 1191, English King Richard the Lionheart & Crusaders defeated the Saracens in Palestine.

June 29th: 1613, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre burns down during a production of Henry VIII, a stage canon ignited the thatched roof and burned down the theatre in less than 2 hours.
 
June 30th: 1882, Death of Charles J. Guiteau, he was an assassin, who assonated President Garfield, he was found guilty and hanged at 40 years of age.
 
July 1st: 1905, Albert Einstein introduced his theory of relativity.
 
July 2nd: 1850, Death of Robert "Bobbie" Peel. He was a British Prime Minister and the founder of the London Police. He died at 62 years old.
 
July 3rd: 1793, Birth of English poet John Clare. He was born in Helpston.
 
July 4th: 1862, Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll,  created Alice in Wonderland for Alice Liddell on a family boat trip on the river Isis (Thames) in Oxford.
 
July 5th: 1973, the Isle of Man began issuing their own postage stamps.

June 22nd: 1911, King George V is crowned king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and all his realms and territories beyond the sea.
 
June 23rd: 1894, birth of Edward VIII, King of Great Brit, Northern Ireland and Emperor of India. He was the oldest son of King George V. He was born in Richmond in Surrey.
 
June 24th: 1314, the Battle of Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce fought the English and Scotland regained independence from England.
 
June 25th: 1483, Edward V, king of England, is murdered. He was one of the Princes in the Tower, and this is the date he and his brother disappeared from the public view, and there are many theories that King Richard III had them murdered in the Tower.
 
June 26th: 1483, Duke of Gloucester appointed himself King Richard III of England.
 
June 27th: 1959, the musical "West Side Story" closed at Winter Garden Theatre in New York City after 734 performances.
 
June 28th: 1846, the Saxophone was patented by Antoine Joseph Sax.

June 15th: 1849; James Knox Polk the 11th US President from 1845 to 1849 died in Nashville, Tennessee aged 53.
 
June 16th: 1943; Charlie Chaplin aged 54 married actress Oona O'Neill, who was aged 18. They eloped and got married in Carpinteria. She was his forth wife.
 
 
June 17th: 1239; Birth of Edward I, King of England from 1272 to1307. He was also known as Edward Longshanks and Hammer of the Scots. His men captured William Wallace and he had Wallace executed.  He was born in the Palace of Westminster and was the first Son of Henry III.
 
June 18th: 1639; Treaty of Berwick: Ends the First Bishops' War between England and Scotland. It is also known as Peace of Berwick, Archibald Johnston was involved in the negotiations before King Charles was forced to sign the treaty.
 
June 19th: 1566; Birth of James Stuart, who was King James VI of Scotland from 1567 to 1625. After the death of Elizabeth I he became James I of England and Ireland from 1603 to 1625.

June 8th: 1913, Emily Davison, suffragette, died after being trampled by a horse. She was aged 40. Her cause of death, by internal injuries and a fractured skull.
 
June 9th: 1934, the first Donald Duck cartoon, called Wise Little Hen was released.
 
June 10th: 1922, Birth of one of my favourite actresses, Judy Garland, who was born Frances Gumm, in Minnesota. Probably most famous for the Wizard of Oz.

June 11th: 1509, King Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon, his first wife, but who was also his brother’s widow. They were married at Greenwich Church, Henry had not long turned 18 and Catherine was 23.
 
June 12th: 1929, Birth of Anne Frank. Born in Frankfurt Germany. In 1942, she received her diary as a birthday present.
 
June 13th: 1731, Birth of Martha Washington. Born in Kent County, Virginia. She was the 1st US First Lady (1789-97)
