10th: 1898, Birth of Jack Haley [born John
Joseph], who was an American actor. Best known for his role as the Tin man in
The Wizard of Oz. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts.

11th: 480 BC, the Death of Leonidas, King of Sparta.
August
12th: 1492, Christopher
Columbus arrived in the Canary Islands on his first voyage to the New World.

13th: 1792, In France, Revolutionaries imprisoned
French royals including Marie Antoinette.
August
14th: 1851, Birth of Doc Holliday. Birth name was
John Henry Holliday. Born in Griffin Georgia. He was an American gambler,
dentist and gunfighter. He was involved in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral,
alongside the Earp Brothers.
August 15th: 1040, King Duncan I of Scotland
was killed in battle against his first cousin and rival Macbeth, who does
succeed him as King. (Unlike Shakespeare’s
play where he is murdered in his sleep!) Also on this day 17 years later in 1057, Macbeth, King of
Scots, was slain by son of King Duncan.

16th: 1977, the death of Elvis Presley. An
American musician. He died at Graceland at the age 42. Official cause of death
was cardiac arrhythmia.
