6th: 1199,
Richard I, the Lion-hearted who was King of England from 1189 to 1199, dies at
the age of 41. He died in Châlus, Duchy of Aquitaine,
now in Limousin, France.

7th: 1968, Jim
Clark, who was a two-time F1 World Champion and winner of the Indianapolis 500,
died in a racing accident during a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim, Germany at the
age of 32. There is a museum, not far from where I live, in Duns that is
dedicated to him, the Jim Clark Room. Also in his memory, there is the Jim
Clark Rally held in the Scottish Borders.

8th: 1943, the U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt,
attempted to check inflation by freezing wages and prices. Also prohibiting workers
from changing jobs unless the war effort would be aided thereby, and bars rate
increased to common carriers and public utilities.

9th: 1413, Henry
V is crowned King of England. He was the second monarch from the House of
Lancaster. His Coronation was held at Westminster Abbey.

10th: 1848, British
influential art critic and social commentator John Ruskin marries Effie Gray in
Perth, Scotland. This marriage was later annulled. Also on this day in 1912 was the Maiden
Voyage of RMS Titanic, leaving from Southampton.

11th: 1814, Napoleon
abdicated unconditionally and he was exiled to the island of Elba.

12th: 1945, Franklin
D Roosevelt, the 32nd US President from 1933 to 1945 died at the age of 63.
