Berwick-Upon-Tweed: Mayor's Parade.
On Sunday, 24th May, me and my Mum went over to our Town Centre and positioned ourselves ready for the Mayor's parade that was taking place that morning.
It was great to see how many locals and visitors turned up for this fab event. Our town relishes history and this parade just added to it!
my Mum waiting for the parade to start! The parade was also a part of my towns celebrations of turning 900 this year. Can you believe it Berwick is 900 years old?! The town will be having loads of events to celebrate this! Any way time for pics of the parade! The first pipe band to come down in the parade was Berwick Pipe Band, leading on! They were followed by the Freeman of the town! (For more info: http://www.freemenofberwick.org.uk/) The Freeman are dress in their purple ceremonial robes! After many societies and local children, the parade had Northumbrian water mascots! The next band to lead the next part the parade was, Duns Pipe Band.
Next in the procession was the Tweedmouth Salmon Queen and her attendants!
She was followed by the Eyemouth Herron Queen and her maids!
She was followed by the Spittal Gala Queen.
After the young girls and their attendants had passed, Morpeth Pipe band and 2 Highland Dancers lead the last part of the Parade! They were followed by the Local Air Cadets. Fancy Horses and carriages came down the parade next, they stopped at the Town Hall steps to pick up the Mayor and her Party! This was followed by 17th Century Pike Men. Last but not least was the Leader of the Riding of the Bounds, which took place earlier in the Month. The parade only lasted about 10 to 15 minutes, but the festivities didn't stop there, it continued to the party on the parade which took place along in front of Berwick's Barracks. The Mayor and the Sheriff entered the Events Marquee to thank everyone fro attending and to officially open the party! The Mayor has recently been newly appointed, Hazel Bettison and her Sheriff Ian Hay. I thought that after this, the only celebrations that were left on the day were the highland dancers and pipe bands in the Barracks, which tickets were required. so me and mum headed back to the main high street to have a look around the shops when..... Duns Pipe Band were performing on the Town Hall Steps! Before this there had been Morris Dancers, but I never saw them. Thanks for reading! Claire x |
